Motivation and Mentoring

A Motivation Training to Inspire Value and Engagement, designed specifically for learning support professionals at Texas State University, including peer mentors, tutors, academic coaches, and supplemental instruction (SI) leaders.

Course/Module/Training Overview

The M.O.T.I.V.E workshop is a single 90-minute interactive training session divided into three 30-minute parts, integrating theory, discussion, and practical application.

o   Part 1: Understanding Student Motivation (30 minutes)

Introduces key motivational concepts through short explanations and guided reflection.

Participants identify common motivational challenges students face in tutoring and mentoring contexts.

o   Part 2: Applying Motivation in Learning Support (30 minutes)

Demonstrates practical communication and feedback techniques based on motivational theories.

Includes role-play and discussion using real academic support scenarios.

o   Part 3: Putting Motivation into Practice (30 minutes)

Participants design a brief “Motivation-in-Action Plan” that describes how they will apply the strategies learned in their work.

They share and discuss their plans with peers for feedback and improvement
